Syllabus Goal

Magnetic resonance (NMR, ESR) and Masers/Lasers.

Magnetic Resonance

  • NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance): Spin flips of nuclei in B-field. $$ \omega_L = \gamma B $$
  • ESR (Electron Spin Resonance): Spin flips of unpaired electrons.

Lasers

Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.

  • Population Inversion: More atoms in excited state than ground state.
  • Pumping: Mechanism to achieve inversion (optical, electrical).
  • Cavity: Feedback mechanism for amplification.
